Our 8-month-old son outgrew his favorite toy (the Fisher-Price Jumperoo) about a month ago. His increased mobility meant the Jumperoo felt more constricting than freeing, and we’d been having trouble finding a new toy to fill the void left in the Jumperoo’s disuse. We stumbled across this on accident and bought it because it reminded us of several toys we’d loved in childhood, with the added bonus they were all rolled into one.

We cannot stress how much our son loves this toy. Each face has something different for him to explore. When he’s finished with one side for the time being, he’ll move around to other sides or the top to keep the amusement coming. Even as I type, he’s busy banging closed the doors on one side of the cube.

The top is easily the best part for both us and our son. David’s had a fabulous time using it not only to stand but to figure out, finally, how to fall into a sit. The day before yesterday, he literally giggled the whole time he practiced sitting for an hour. More practice yesterday and he’s both a falling and a sitting pro. Note, as another reviewer mentioned, you DO have to sit close by, because the wrong lean *can* lead it to tip for a not-yet-autonomous stander. This happens in maybe a quarter – probably a high estimate – of our son’s stands so far.

Then there’s all the fun in pushing the top toys along their preset paths along the top. The bridges encourages him to figure out movement under and on both sides of each bridge. This is in addition to watching him explore both pushing animals (and beads!) along their path and figuring out how to rotate them in circles where they stand.

We’re amazed how much fun and challenge can be fit into one single cube. This is beautifully designed, aesthetically pleasing, free from sharp corners and overall an amazing toy. We’re honestly trying to think who else we can buy one of these for! The temptation is rather strong to just play with it ourselves.

If only we’d had this as children! :)

We bought this for my daughter when she was about nine months old. In the beginning, she was mainly interested in spinning the animal alphabet tiles, but as she grows she keeps discovering more and more things to play with. Right now, she really likes the animal pegs on one of the sides that’s not pictured–hard to describe, but they’re kind of like Plinko. She also loves opening and closing the doors on another side, and she’s just starting to spend time playing with the bead maze and the animals on top. I can see this toy holding her interest for several months.

I like that this toy is made of wood and is very sturdy. She hasn’t had any difficulty pulling herself up on it (though she is a bit of string bean, so this may change as she gets bigger), and the rounded corners are safer than sharp edges. It’s also very bright and colorful, and the animal alphabet is pretty creative. (For example, N = narwhal.) Compared to identical activity cubes (same toy, different color scheme) that cost significantly more, I think this toy is a great value.

I purchased this toy for my 10 month old and she just loves it. I like that the edges are rounded off unlike other activity cubes that I have seen.

Step 2 WaterWheel Activity Play Table

June 6th, 2010 No comments

Product Features:

  • Wide receptacle funnels water over spinning wheel, into inner and outer harbors
  • Molded-in sections create moats, lakes, canals, and harbors
  • Elevated design makes play accessible while keeping children out of the dirt and mud
  • 4-piece accessory set with boats, cup, and water wheel tower

The falling water action from this Waterwheel Play Table encourages creative exploration with cause and effect learning. This imaginative water play center encourages hours of outdoor fun. Pour water into the wide funnel, and activate the water wheel which then spills into the inner and outer harbors. Two molded-in sections function as canals, boats, lakes, harbors and more. An elevated design keeps water at toddler level and also keeps ground dirt clear of water and mud from forming on children’s feet. It accommodates up to three children to encourage group play. Two built-in drain plugs allow for easy water removal. The four piece accessory set includes: one cup, two sailboats, and one water wheel tower. Features decorative molded-in fish

We have owned this water play table for nearly siz months, and its play value has not decreased at all. It is short enough that our 16 month old has always been able to participate comfortably, and interesting enough that it still attracts my 4 and 6 year old children as well.

The water wheel is great fun, and the children love scooping water into its reserve to make it spin. The two levels of the table give the children individual play space if two children are playing. Now that winter is approaching, I look forward to adding sand instead of water to the table. I appreciate the easy-to-open plugs built into the basin, as it makes it easy to remove water (or sand). The toy, though sturdy, is also lightweight enough for an adult to pick up and simply pour water out, if desired. Children cannot, however, easily move or turn the table over.

I recently purchased the water wheel table after looking at just about every kind available. Although I originally wanted a sand/water combo, I’m glad that I went with the water-only version. My 21-month-old is not known for sticking with one activity for very long, but she seems to love this toy.

Though we haven’t had the table for long, I am very glad I didn’t spend more on the larger combo tables.

Here are the pros:

~ Extremely easy to assemble. Absolutely no tools required and assembly, from box to completion, took less than 5 minutes.

~ Very light-weight and compact. The table is easy for an adult to lift (without the water) but it is still sturdy enough for a toddler. While this table is more compact than many on the market, it will accomodate 2-3 toddlers quite easily.

~ Less messy than combo tables. No sand to mix for a muddy mess.

~ Comes with water wheel, cup and two sail boats.

Here are the Cons:

~ Mine does not appear to have a plug. No leaks this way, but a bit harder to drain. However it is small enough that an adult can easily tip it over for cleaning.

~ No cover. This is my only real complaint. If a cover had been included, this would be ideal. However, the compact size makes it easy to drain and fill, so the lack of cover isn’t really a big deal.

~ The water wheel is not attached and can be knocked over pretty easily. Not a big deal, but something to note.

~ The toys are just okay. I’ll be adding more.

Overall, I found the water wheel table to be a good value, particularly if you want a more compact water table that is easy to assemble, move and store.

My daughter has always really liked the water, so we got her this table to play with on the patio. She loves it! She’s still learning to stand and move around @ 8 mo. and the table is sturdy enough for her to pull up on and hang on to for balance (supervised of course). She really likes watching the water wheel go around and splashing away!

The drain does leak a little, but it’s not a big deal. When we’re done playing with the water, it gets dried off and brought inside as an additional play table. We stick toys in it and she walks around the edges playing with the toys in the middle.

Great value for the money. I had looked at a bunch of the other reviews on combo sand and water tables and saw good advice to keep sand and the water as separate activities to avoide a big mess. We’ll get her a sand box when she’s older, since she’s still too young to have sand – it would just get eaten.

I have mixed feelings about this product. My 20 month old daughter plays with it alot and seems to enjoy it. My complaint is that the snaps, buttons and shapes can all be removed (and lost – and amazingly return) from the book. The plastic buckle on the buckle page was removed by my daughter within weeks. I’ve read reviews about how this book is great for the car and other types of travel. However, the pieces often fall to the floor of the car and most times cannot be retreived. The button page does not allow for both the button and button hole to be held, which doesn’t emulate actual buttoning. The ballons that snap onto their page do not have any indication of where to line up or press the snap into place. I’ve already ordered another set of books where the pieces remain with the book.

We were in the market for a way for our 4 year old to practice buttoning, tieing, snapping, etc., in the car and at church. Although several of the reviews were concerned about the myriad of small parts that could be lost, we decided to take a chance. Perhaps the manufacturer has heard their complaints, as our version has all the pieces attached with strings, so nothing has gotten lost. Though I’m sure very young children could pull them off if they wanted to, it has stood up to our 2 and 4 yr. old boys beautifully!
