A college education online is an affordable alternative

October 26th, 2011 No comments

One of the most important and difficult roles a parent will fulfill in her or his life is that of educating the children.

This is because they realize that this is the best inheritance that they could leave their children that could never be grabbed easily by bad people.

However, this role involves financial sacrifice over the years just to see their kids through college education, which is the most expensive almost everywhere around the world.

Citizens of developed countries are lucky to study freely all the way to high school or even to the college level while those in developing countries pay for education fully.

As a result, many people study up to high school level and then forget about ever being capable of pursuing other levels because of high costs involved.

Those who still choose to endure these costs may opt for federal or private student loans that they expect to pay back after they are done with their courses and secure employment.

Others attend classes and take odd jobs to pay part of other collage fees like books, personal expenses and at the same time depending on school loans for tuition fees just to acquire this education.

So, we can really say that a lot of people who lack higher education are constrained by lack of money not necessarily their inability to understand education.

Today, a lot is happening online including college education that is affordable and from world class accredited universities and collages.

I have always been skeptical of a lot of businesses done online and I know I am not alone, but I know of people who have more than online degree.

At times, we may fear loosing our money to people we do not see but they respond when we transact with them online, however the world is for risk takers.

As advertised on the sites offering these online degrees, the charges are completely affordable by anyone who is capable of saving up for a few months as opposed to the normal learning institutions.

If one should go for an online collage education, the first step will be locating the top accredited institution, implying that it has met a set of standards circulated by a governing board.

It gives such a prospective online learner the assurance that the college is eminent worldwide and therefore meets particular merit principles of education.

The certificates offered are not indicated that the scholar acquired them online, it will carry the title of the accredited institution and can be used freely just like one would use that of a physical college.

What is even more beneficial as opposed to attending classes is that one can choose to register in numerous programs rather than one at a time as required by physical institutions.

These will be based on a person’s work and life experience. They do not favor only the U.S citizens; even international students can go online for their college education.

I see this as an equitable method of allowing anyone who would like to pursue any type of course at whatever level to have an opportunity to attain it cheaply and conveniently, as they would like.

From East to West – Exploring the Meaning of Education

I was lucky to have the opportunity to direct this short documentary in 2007, when I first came to Canada from China for my Grade 11 education. It was submitted and played at the 14th Victoria Film Festival and was supervised and sponsored by Canadian independent film maker Barbara Hager. The film mainly explores the differences and similarities between the education systems in China and Canada. Over 50 local high school students were interviewed during the process.

LMS Means Quality Education

October 24th, 2011 No comments

Education feeds the mind and is the starting point of every human activity. If education is jeopardized especially in the school, then what is the purpose of getting one? If the students are not able to gain knowledge to nurture them for the future, then what achievement do they get from going to school?

In America, the quality of public school education has declined because of the recorded violence that happens during school days. School violence has been listed as one of the serious problems that make excellent curriculum, competent teachers, and great facilities futile because studentsâ?? learning is disturbed. Among the recorded and â??popularâ? school violence include bullying, fighting, gang activity, gun use, and locker thefts. Ostensibly, one cannot blame the student attackers who start these kinds of aggression, nor can one condemn the parents for not imposing discipline over their children. More so, the local government can only do as much to enforce regulations and ordinances to obviate school violence and to terminate it when it happens.

Clearly the school is laden with this vicious problem on violence. In the past, the U.S. Department of Education elaborated that there is no one anti-violence program that could solve the problem across all schools. The system of individual schools can only be suited for a specific academic institution because of demographics; hence, there is no ubiquitous anti-violence intervention, policy, and program.

As the key player to this problem, school administrators can design a program that will potentially dart the issue at core. A solution that can be declared universal is the Learning Management System or LMS. The LMS is software that tracks, delivers, serves, and manages education and training. Many popular LMSâ??s are internet-based to assist learning monitoring online, used to cater to different administrative, deployment, and educational prerequisite. It provides a central point for training and learning development work. The LMS can provide quantifiable results â?? where a classroom set-up may not.

If school violence is attributed to the physical and personal interaction of students, then the LMS is the best solution to disconnect the hostile relationship. Virtual learning can allow a more effective exchange of information among students because it streamlines idle times that would have spent over settling gang fights, for instance. Discussions and learning become focused and intensive because of the absence of unnecessary distractions from the environment. Likewise, the students are trained to become more interactive with a positive sense through the use of multimedia, and other technology benefits; hence turning learning more interesting and effective. Teachers can automatically test the knowledge and competency of the students using the LMS.

A learning management system is flexible and versatile that could resolve the problem of school violence in the country. The LMS has so much to offer which could re-boost the quality of education in public schools. It is in the hands of the school administrators to make things happen and ignite change to uplift the status of education in America.

An Overview on the Indian Distance Learning Education System

October 23rd, 2011 No comments

In a recent public appearance, while inaugurating the three day national workshop on distance learning, honourable Mr. S K Sinha, Governor Jammu & Kashmir, referred to the distance learning education system as the most suitable learning schema to reach remote areas. The special reference in the speech was towards provision of education, in the areas untouched by tradition classroom learning modules and thus appropriateness of this counter program. While the stated is certainly a wise call, however as an education seeker, there definitely is much more to analyze, before enrolling with a distance learning curriculum.

Before highlighting upon the nuances of distance education in Indian context, it is imperative to clearly understand the concept. Distance education, unlike the classroom learning system, enables the learning process between the educator and learners, while they are not physically present at a common venue. Communication happens over various channels including print, electronic, real time technology and more. In the present scenario, the advent of technology in this domain is rampantly increasing.

Pros and cons of distance learning with specific reference to the Indian education scenario:

The invisible bridge: Distance education is an evolving field with obvious merits. For those who for any reason cannot make it to the classrooms, distance learning is the perfect answer. It simply connects the two ends of education rope and thus simplifies the learning process.

Efficient system: Distance learning does not mandates physical attendance and thus saves on commuting and miscellaneous time heads. It is an efficient learning schema, which maximises output in minimal time.

Apt for professionals: Distance education is especially convenient for working professionals, who cannot spare 2-3 years for pursuing full time higher education courses.

Host of options: Distance learning offers education curriculum over a host of learning streams to include higher education. Even the most reputed of education programs like IIT are soon to be added to the already extensive list.

Quality Concerns: Distance learning is a definite education enhancer, especially for geographies like India, where students from remote areas are unable to learn and thus grow. However, with lesser restrictions and almost negligible practical guidance, the quality aspects of the curriculum are highly questionable. The situation further worsens in developing nations like India, where even in classroom learning mode, the education quality is often compromised.

Infrastructural mismatch: Distance education has been a wonderful model in developed parts of the globe, where the most superior technology enabled tools disseminate the course nitty-gritty. However in India, even the basic online access is not available to majority. The mismatch would be explicitly apparent, if compared with aptly progressed nations, where distance learning is synonymous to online learning.

Lack of information: Distance education in India is still in nascent stages and as a growing concept, it is not perhaps being adequately nurtured. Aspirants are still not clear on the procedure and the communication channels are too loosely knitted. In such circumstances, the adequacy of the concept is gravely skeptical.

The Gates and Hewlett Foundations Team Up to Advance Education and Technology

October 22nd, 2011 No comments

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is a well known non-profit sponsor of education grants and initiatives. Recently, the Gates Foundation has teamed up with the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and four other education non-profits to fund and promote a new education initiative that takes aim at poor national graduation rates with the “development and use of online learning tools.”

In today’s economy, the vast majority of new jobs require more than a high school diploma. However, statistics show that fewer than half of American’s under the age of thirty have a postsecondary certificate, diploma or degree.

To combat these harrowing statistics, the Gates Foundation has gifted an initial $ 20 million for the development and implementation of postsecondary online courses and online learning tools. These online tools and courses will cater to community colleges and low-income students.

With online education continually expanding, many critics still wonder about its effectiveness. However, experts say that “if technology is well designed, it can help tailor the learning experience to individual students, facilitate student-teacher collaboration, and assist teachers in monitoring student performance each day and in quickly fine-tuning lessons.”

In many online higher education institutions as well as projects studying the implementation of online education technology at ground-school universities like Carnegie Mellon University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the use of online courses has been extremely promising.

For this reason, the Gates and Hewlett Foundations are focusing their initial efforts on higher education.  “The program’s members say the timing seems right for such an effort, partly because the technology of online learning is advancing rapidly. And, they add, budget-constrained colleges have a greater economic incentive to try online tools, if they are going to make headway in preparing a greater number of students for an economy that increasingly requires workers with higher levels of skills.”

Gates has spoken publically in the past about the importance of utilizing technology to learn, and is a major supporter of online education and online learning.  Recently the Microsoft founder noted that, “innovation is your only hope, and the only new game in town is technology.”

By creating and funding this initiative, the Gates and Hewlett Foundations and fellow non-profits hope to increase access and accelerate learning through the use of online technology. In fact say Gates and Hewlett Foundation representatives, “The online tools can help open up educational pathways to skills, especially for low-income young adults.”

Access to new technology is often very limited for low-income students. The Gates and Hewlett Foundations hope to not only change accessibility issues for low-income or underrepresented students, but to help improve national graduation rates.

Distance School Education For Living Abroad Canadians

October 20th, 2011 No comments

Distance education is generally useful for individuals who cannot achieve higher education because of many reasons to advance in their career. As the cost of living and education soar to the sky the need of gaining a spot in universities is as much difficult as the need to achieve college education.

Hence, many students join colleges and universities right after they leave high school, though some cannot afford the high tuition fees or have simply taken up jobs and made a living out of it.

A bachelors degree distance learning program is a great way for students to get in touch with college education. Age is not a limit. Similarly, it does not matter if you are coming straight from the high school or have been working for 20 years. Distance learning is great in a way that it will not only reward you with a competitive degree but also help you gain very important skills required for your career.

A bachelor degree distance learning program helps make a significant and important difference in the lives of individuals as it opens up more job options for them, and helps them learn a better way to utilize their knowledge in the best way possible. Many businesses and companies require an individual to have to have some bachelor degree, unless they have equivalent work experience to a degree. However, students are required to take up tests and quizzes frequently and are required to do their work properly and keep up their grades.

If a student chooses not to study his work, then he is simply wasting not only his money, but his time as well. A bachelor degree distance learning program charges its students for the courses hey take just like in any college or univ. Therefore it is the responsibility of students to be completely motivated to finish their course work.

Financial aid packages are available for students enrolled in the bachelor degree distance learning program, regardless of whether you are just leaving high school or have been out of school for many years and working. Education in USA – a country of opportunities

October 11th, 2011 No comments

The best destination for a student to go for his higher education would be USA, due to its rich heritage, developed infrastructure and wide range of options, not to forget the degree that is recognized all over the globe. What more could a student ask for. USA surely is a land of opportunities; it has so much to offer that a student would be lucky and privileged to get admission in one of the .

Whether itâ??s a small university in a small town or a big university in the main city you are looking for, USA has it all. It has a plethora of not just subjects and courses but also well reputed universities. Every year, thousands of students try and go to USA for higher studies. It has options suiting to every oneâ??s needs and preferences, no wonder it lures students from different parts of world setting them in the top of the careers with their advanced technology and modern teaching methods, which is the reason why it isnâ??t an easy job to get into a good USA university. It needs lot of hard work and preparation to get admission to . Three main requisites to get admission are:

Good grades/marks. Strong financial support. Strong hold on the English language and communication.

As per stats, USA is known to absorb the largest number of students from all over the globe. In 2007, it enrolled more then 6 lakh students at international level in its universities, out of which more then 80 thousand were Indians. The count is steadily rising every year.

The education system in USA is very different from that prevailing in India. Itâ??s an informal system where the studentsâ?? view is equally taken into account. The students are encouraged to openly discuss their point and open discussions are held. Though itâ??s not only studies all the time, as fun and parties are equally a part of every campus environment but itâ??s a logical balance of both.

Every university in USA follows one or the other standard tests that prevail. To get into a university in USA, one needs to score well in any one or more of the following tests:

â?? Graduate Management Admission Test. SAT â?? Scholastic Aptitude Test. GRE â?? Graduate Record Examination. TOEFL (for non Americans) â?? test Of English As Foreign Language

Most of these tests are designed to evaluate the skills and aptitude of a student rather than their depth of knowledge.

To support education financially, there are three main ways to do so. One is funding via university, second is funding via private source and third is funding via government sources. This financial help works on two grounds. Firstly, it is on the basis of your need that is they evaluate your yearly income and your paying capacity and then decide the amount. Secondly, it is on the merit basis. It is rewarded as a scholarship to the student based upon his academic performance and scores. Besides this, many students opt to earn while they study there. Itâ??s a largely followed tradition for migrating students.

USA is a good option for a student to go for his/her higher education courses. To get admission, you should apply personally to each university or sit for the common test to admission. More information regarding the colleges and universities in USA can be found on the internet, education sites, education forums etc.
