Tips in Teaching Technology to Older People

Teaching technology, especially the internet, to elderly is actually considered as one of the hardest things to do because of the thing known as “generation gap”. Here are some of the tips that you may want to consider if you want to teach technology to elderly.

The first thing that you should put in mind is that teaching new things to older people may be hard since there may be various reasons on why it is hard for them to comprehend with the latest technologies that we have today. Most elderlies are afraid of the technology that we have today that they do not want to use it. But with proper education, they may also be able to take full advantage of the benefits that the technology that we have today has to offer.

The next thing that you have to have is patience. Teaching old people requires patience since they may not be able to understand the concepts of latest technologies that we have today right away. In this sense, it is important that you teach them step by step on the technology itself.

You need to start from the very basic so that they will not have hard time comprehending the idea that you are teaching them. This way, you will be able to teach them easily whatever they need to know.

The use of analogies is also one technique which is proven effective since it helps older people to somehow visualize the concepts of the technology that we have today. It is also recommended that you do not use technical words as it may confuse them more.

Lastly, while you are teaching them the concept of technology that they need to know, it is best that you let them use the technology that you are talking about at the same time.

In the course of twenty-five chapters, Smith and Bernhardt write in a lively manner about the elementary rules (and “non-rules”) of grammar, punctuation, sentence structure up through discussions on jargon, technical language, and then on to the “tones” of writing, parallel structure, and playful and elegant prose. I really enjoyed reading this book because I was able to review those elementary rules (without too much pain) as well as get some validation for stylistic choices I’ve made in my own writing. So much of how a person writes — whether it’s “good” writing or not — is rather semi-conscious. “Writing at Work” makes the reader conscious about what they’re doing in their writing as well as makes a strong case for putting elegant, persuasive writing back into technical and business communications.And I only had to re-write the last paragraph a few times….

The basic premise of this book and indeed that of Motivational Interviewing (MI) is that we as individuals have problems and issues and furthermore that given the right circumstances we as individuals have the tools to resolve those issues and problems. Thus although the counsellor/therapist can enable change by creating a conducive environment that supports and sustains the process, it is the client who must be responsible for such change. MI has a grounding in Rogerian therapy but it is more directive rather than non-directive. Commenting on this Miller and Rollnick write ” …the motivational interviewer proceeds with a strong sense of purpose, clear strategies and skills for pursuing that purpose, and a sense of timing to intervene in particular ways at incisive moments.”The book is split into three parts: Background, Practice and Clinical Applications. Thus there is an excellent balance between theoretical considerations and practical implications.The authors outline five principles which underlie MI, these are:1. Express Empathy2. Develop Discrepancy3. Avoid Argumentation4. Roll with Resistance5. Support Self-EfficacyThe book is clear and detailed in how these principles are to be put into practice at differing stages of the change process. It is this clarity – which incidentally runs throughout its pages – which makes ‘Motivational Interviewing’ such an easy yet, I feel essential read. I work for a counselling service for those with alcohol related problems and this text is the one, which I encourage new members of staff and students on placement to read. Similarly, if you are interested in the subject matter of the change process, whether in terms of addictive behaviour or other more non-specific areas, I do recommend that you take a look ‘Motivational Interviewing’.A couple of years ago I attended a conference that Bill Miller had been addressing. It fell to him to make the closing comments. These were pertinent and to the point, however the most notable thing about the closing notes were that Miller sang them in a Country and Western style. A book by anybody that barmy deserves a read!

Although they emphasize substance abuse, the authors’ system applies to almost every problem. It can cut your stress as it helps you become more artful and effective in helping clients actualize thier motivations toward success. Very clearly written, systematic, and enjoyable to read. Special populations are covered. Research is increasingly supporting this approach.

I have worked with criminal offenders for the last 10 years and have found this approach outlined in the book extremely useful. The book is easy to read and follow. I have used the information with Batterers, sex offenders and substance abusers. The only offenders I have found it not appropriate for are “diagnosed” psychopaths.

When do you use a Motivational Interviewing approach? Whenever there is ambivalence for change. How often does ambivalence for change occur? At almost any time people are considering some kind of change. In this 2nd edition of Motivational Interviewing, the authors are very clear that MI is not an approach that obviates the use of other therapy approaches, such as CBT, but is an approach that prepares people for change.I have been a trainer in Motivational Interviewing since 1995 (see http://www.cathycoletraining.com) and am privileged to have received my training from the authors, Drs. Miller and Rollnick. The first edition, Motivational Interviewing, Preparing People to Change Addictive Behavior, provided information that has helped many professionals working in addictions a way to more effectively engage clients in the process of change. The 2nd edition is written so that professionals working with clients around any issues…mental health, health behavior, addictions, health promotion, life coaching…are able to apply the methods for exploring and resolving ambivalence for change.The first three chapters of the book set the stage for understanding the nature of change and ambivalence for change so that the reader is more fully prepared to understand the value of fully understanding the client situation and eliciting desire, ability, reasons, need and committment for change from the client. This approach differs from the often tendency to understand the client’s situation and then in a well meaning way, prescribe the needed steps for change. The strategies for interacting with clients via the use of open ended questions and the use of reflective responses is clearly discussed. Methods for eliciting change talk and responding to the concept of resistance are easily understood and examples are provided that will assist readers in considering how this approach will fit into their unique situations.Of great value to me has been the expanded view of the concept of client resistance. From the MI approach, resistance is seen as occuring in context and is conceived of as dissonance…just a lack of harmony, or being on the same page together. When viewed in this way, it just signals the professional that another approach is needed. How to ‘roll with resistance’ is then illustrated very clearly.This edition of Motivational Interviewing has expanded my ability to provide training. Even more importantly, the emphasis of this edition has underscored even more for me,that in my provision of psychotherapy, MI is not an approach to be pulled out for special occasions but is the treatment philosophy from which I approach all clients, despite the particular therapy modality utilized in the specific work.

I love this book. The second edition is a big improvement over the first as it makes the MI approach more generic (as it should be) and less tied specifically to substance abuse. I regularly use this book when teaching beginning therapy skills to doctoral students in clinical psychology, but it’s not just a book for beginners. What I like is the way Miller & Rollnick spend a lot of time talking about generic skills fundamental to any healthy therapeutic relationship — and especially their discussions about different types of reflective listening and dealing with resistance. The MI approach is especially helpful in dealing with clients who are struggling with ambivalence about their problems (or about being in therapy) — which happens with great frequency in any practice (not just with substance abusers or court-ordered clients). I wish I had had this book 30 years ago when I was starting out as a therapist. I love teaching from it because I can still pick out gems even now. MI fits well with all sorts of other psychotherapy techniques, including client-centered, cognitive-behavioral, and strategic/structural.

As a longtime clinician and trainer of clinicians, I found Miller and Rollnick’s “Motivational Interviewing” (2d edition) extremely sound, helpful and thoughtful. A great book for clinicians to read who are tempted to push one side of a patient’s ambivalence (“But can’t you see you have to leave him — he’s no good for you!”)and not to respect the other side of it.

Self-esteem is a personality ingredient that one has to have and if possible in great amounts. That is not to say that a person need to be extremely sure of oneself to the point of arrogance; they just need enough amounts to be able to withstand the pressures of life and lead a contented existence. It wouldn’t make much difference if self-esteem can be measured.

This is because there is really no specific amount of self-esteem that one can be prescribed with. Different persons need different amounts of self-esteem the same way that different dynamics or aspects of one person’s life require different doses of self-esteem.
